            Step 6 - Your Priorities

Set realistic personal (or family) priorities for your new home . Your first home may not include everything on your wish list, so it is important that you and your family have agreed on your priorities. What are your minimum requirements and what is on your wish list? Minimum requirements are things that a house must have for you to consider it, while a "wish list" covers things that you'd like to have but aren't essential. The types of priorities you will want to consider include:

  • location and type of neighborhood,
  • number and type of rooms,
  • size of house,
  • quality and condition of home,
  • whether or not there is a garage,
  • size of garage and storage area
  • proximity to schools,
  • proximity to work, etc.

Remember, your first house will most likely be a "starter home", and you will most likely have the opportunity to "move up" to a bigger or better house in the future.
